Memory Care in the Buffalo Area

Secured, dementia-specific programming and staffing — but New York doesn't require every program marketed this way to hold a specific state certification.

Memory care is a secured, dementia-specific type of assisted living for residents with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. Compared to standard assisted living, memory care units typically add a locked or coded environment to reduce wandering risk, staff trained specifically in dementia care techniques, a higher staff-to-resident ratio, and a daily schedule of structured, cognition-focused activities rather than a general activities calendar. Meals, personal care, and medication management are included, as in standard assisted living, but delivered by staff trained to work with residents who may have communication or behavioral challenges related to their cognitive decline.

There is no published memory-care-specific cost median anywhere — CareScout, the industry's main cost-of-care survey, does not track memory care as its own category, in New York or nationally. New York's memory care certification rules

A program marketed as "memory care" in New York is not automatically state-certified for it. New York does not require every dementia-care program to hold its specific Special Needs Assisted Living Residence (SNALR) certification — a standard Assisted Living Residence may continue serving a resident with mild-to-moderate dementia under an ordinary care plan.
