Independent Living in the Buffalo Area
Age-restricted apartments and campuses with dining, activities and light services — for seniors who don't need daily care assistance.
Independent living communities are age-restricted apartment communities (typically 55+ or 62+) built for seniors who are fully capable of living on their own but want to shed the burdens of homeownership — lawn care, snow removal, home maintenance — and gain built-in social opportunities. Unlike assisted living, independent living does not include personal care services such as bathing or medication management; residents live in their own apartment and typically have access to communal dining, planned social activities and outings, fitness programming, and transportation services, with maintenance handled by staff. Some communities offer optional a-la-carte services or allow residents to bring in third-party home care providers if light support becomes necessary.
Many of the metro's independent living communities sit on the same campus as a higher level of care from the same operator (a Continuing Care Retirement Community, or CCRC), which lets a resident move to assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing later without switching organizations, if that becomes necessary.
