What happens if my parent's needs eventually exceed what their current community's license allows?
Every New York license tier — plain ALR, EALR, SNALR, or a skilled nursing facility — has boundaries on what level of need it can legally serve, and a resident whose needs exceed those boundaries may need to move, sometimes on short notice. This is one of the most emotionally difficult transitions families face, and it's much easier to plan for calmly in advance than to navigate during a crisis. Ask directly during your initial tour: under what specific circumstances would my parent need to transfer out of this level of care, where does this community typically refer residents in that situation, and is there an affiliated higher-level-of-care community (some Buffalo-area operators, like continuing care retirement communities, keep transfers within the same organization).
