Does it matter which county a facility is in if I'm comparing options across the Buffalo metro?
Short answer: For choosing a facility, county lines matter less than they do for benefits administration — a family can reasonably compare an Erie County and a Niagara County community side by side. Where county lines matter more is Medicaid casework, APS reporting, and local aging-agency contact.
Erie and Niagara counties sit close enough together, and are connected well enough by road, that many Buffalo-metro families genuinely cross county lines when choosing a community — a family based in North Tonawanda (Niagara County) might reasonably tour communities in Amherst or Williamsville (Erie County) and vice versa. The distinction becomes more important on the administrative side: which county's Department of Social Services handles a Medicaid application, which county's Adult Protective Services office takes an abuse report, and which county aging-services agency provides local case management. Both counties share the same Region 15 ombudsman office, which simplifies that one piece regardless of which county a resident lives in.
